From the pop-up office, employees picked up the idea for a "New Work Day".

A new way of thinking beyond the boundaries of individual organisational units and media: the pop-up office has set a real change process in motion at Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR).

"We often take too long to decide what to do and how to do it. That has been enough for a linear programme so far. But if we want to be present on many playout channels, we have to work faster and more agile. We also have to constantly check our programmes to see whether we are still meeting audience expectations or whether we need to offer something different. We have to react quickly to this."

Output

Internal restructuring, the development of change management and spatial reorganisation - at NDR Fernsehen, participation in the pop-up office has promoted a new approach to collaboration.

In future, NDR's editorial teams are to work together more quickly and more intensively in order to disseminate content via a variety of multimedia channels. One important step is the New Work Day: around 200 NDR employees will come together for the first time in 2019 to discuss issues and methods from the field of "New Work" in presentations and workshops. The day is intended to be the starting signal for a long-term project to implement new methods into everyday working life in the long term.

Format & method

  • In the pop-up office, creatives and professionals from other sectors, solo freelancers and employees from start-ups, SMEs and large corporations change perspectives together.
  • The interdisciplinary teams go through an intensive work process:day after day, the participants gain new insights into cultural change, agile management approaches, digitalisation and contemporary office and workplace design through cross-sectoral work and keynote speeches.
  • Experienced coaches guide the teams through a"culture sprint" - from the definition of cross-industry relevant topics to the development of specific questions and potential solutions. The teams develop and visualise their ideas in the form of prototypes.

Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) is a joint state broadcaster for Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg. Its headquarters are in Hamburg. It is a member of ARD and has the legal form of a non-profit organisation under public law. NDR currently employs around 3,400 permanent staff. In addition, there are over 1,000 freelance employees.
