Albis &Drägerwerk: The hospital room of the future

The hospital room of the future has been created in the Cross Innovation Lab.

In the Cross Innovation Lab, plastics manufacturer Albis experienced how valuable open-ended processes are.

Challenge

Innovation cycles are shortening, markets are becoming more complex - the framework conditions of industry are in a state of flux. New solutions are needed for the manufacturing industry to remain competitive in the global market. In the Cross Innovation Lab, the company Albis, a distributor and manufacturer of plastics, and the medical equipment manufacturer Drägerwerk have taken up this challenge together with creative minds.

In addition to the question of how Albis can be integrated more effectively into the customers' design processes, the topic was how damage to equipment caused by aggressive and regularly used cleaning agents can be avoided.

Output

Through collaboration with experts from the creative industries, the previous equipment and cleaning design was radically questioned. The result is a visonary hygenic design concept for the intensive care room of the future.

The system consists of two components:
First, the surfaces to be cleaned were reduced. The system does away with the separation of the user interface in the patient room and the device outside the room and combines both on one panel - the Dräger interface.

In addition, an intelligent cleaning assistant (Lili) was designed which, with the help of augmented reality technologies, can record when a surface was last cleaned and whether it was cleaned without gaps.

The vision: In hospitals with Dräger Interface and Lili, the transmission rate and the risk of infection with multi-resistant germs is drastically reduced for patients.

A positive side effect: Based on the procedural experiences of the Cross Innovation Lab, Albis is currently working on a process for intensifying the cooperation between you and the customers in an early development phase.

Team: Matthias Schulz, Tania Tammling, Dörte Scharnowski, Harld Ott, Björn Otto, Mike Freudenstein, Dr Andreas Haase, Henrick Schnaars, Marc Geberbauer, Dieter Settgast, Florian Schaake (Industrial Design & CGI), Paul Claussen (Integrated Design), Olaf Wordehoff (Design).

"Working with creatives in the Cross Innovation Lab allows for completely new perspectives on the problem and possible solutions, which are developed into a concrete concept within the well-structured programme with a tight schedule in a trusting and eye-to-eye atmosphere."
