From July 2021 to July 2025, Frei_Fläche promoted creative interim uses in Hamburg. The project has now come to an end.

For four years, we transformed vacant spaces in Hamburg into temporary studios, workshops, exhibition venues, co-working spaces, presentation areas and much more with the help of the Fund for Creative Interim Utilisation. As part of the funding programme, which ran until 30 June 2025, creative professionals only paid a monthly contribution of 1.50 euros per square metre - landlords benefited from the revitalisation of their vacant space. The Kreativplanet JUPITER directly at the railway station was the largest vacant space - but there is much more to discover!
Deserted shops and empty streets characterised the cityscape when the coronavirus lockdowns paralysed public life. At the same time, creative professionals were fighting for their livelihoods. The City of Hamburg responded in 2021 with the "Fund for Creative Interim Use", which was financed from funds to overcome the coronavirus crisis - and has been extended several times with budget funds since 2023 thanks to its great success. Together with the Ministry of Culture and Media, the Finance Authority and the Landesbetrieb Immobilienmanagement und Grundvermögen, we developed the funding programme and have since enabled numerous creative interim uses from Altona to Bergedorf.
