Art and culture instead of tax and finance business: Since 2013, we have been renting space in the Altona Old Tax Office to creative people.

A total of 30 rental units between 20 and 80m² are spread over two floors. The rooms can be used in a variety of ways: from a studio to an office to a recording studio, (almost) anything is possible.
In the heart of Altona
The Alte Finanzamt is located in the heart of Altona, in the lively Große Bergstraße. Altona is one of the most multifaceted districts in Hamburg: small galleries line up with large exhibition halls, quaint pubs with trendy bars, old-established with innovative.
Evaluation report
The issue of selling buildings and land has accompanied the interim use of the Altona Old Tax Office from the beginning. The district campaigned at all levels for a permanent creative-economic use of the building. The cooperative project Neues Amt Altona was successful in a concept tender in 2019. One of the things that convinced them was that the creative use of the existing building is to continue for a total of 20 years.
An analysis of the previous interim use in the Altona Old Tax Office represents an interesting field of investigation with regard to other comparable projects in the city of Hamburg. A successfully completed interim use can be the basis of argumentation and legitimisation for further comparable projects in the inner city.
Against this background, Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft has carried out an evaluation of the previous use of the Altona Old Tax Office and examined and evaluated the course and experiences of the subtenants on the two floors at different levels.

The rental is exempt from turnover tax. Following a public tender for the building by the Landesbetrieb Immobilienmanagement und Grundvermögen, a change of ownership is currently taking place. This will end the interim use of the building. However, the two floors will remain in the portfolio of the Kreativ Gesellschaft, so that the creative business use can continue after the change of ownership.
