From 13 to 23 June, the Design Zentrum Hamburg will be presenting pioneering materials and innovations in textile design at the second Textile Week.
Under the title "Future Materials", Textile Week 2024 is dedicated to the outstanding social importance of textiles in an exhibition, specialist lectures and workshops. As a partner country, Sweden will be presenting innovative and forward-looking projects from its textile industry.
New materials, innovative production processes, smart technologies: Current developments in textile design offer a preview of what will shape our society and all industrial sectors in the coming decades. After all, textiles not only play an important role in the fashion world, they are also a raw material in many other areas.
Leather alternatives made from food waste, textiles in virtual reality or the return of production facilities to city centres: Textile Week offers a platform for visionary projects by regional, national and international textile designers, universities, institutes and companies. As the guest country, Sweden will be presenting the textile centre of Borås and perspectives from Swedish companies such as Fjällräven and Södra, while the University of Applied Sciences (HAW), the Academy of Fashion and Design (AMD) and the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin will be showcasing study and research projects. Young, up-and-coming textile designers and companies will also be showcasing their innovative projects. The FABRIC - Future Fashion Lab provides insights into the newly opened spaces in Hamburg's city centre.
Annika Fitz, curator of Textile Week: "We want to show how innovative and ground-breaking current developments in textile design are. Because textile design is so much more than the weaving class from the Bauhaus of days gone by. It combines materials research, mechanical engineering, process design and programming. Hardly any other design discipline influences the industrial sectors - and ultimately our everyday lives - as much as textile design. I am delighted that, following the success of Textile Week 2022, we are once again offering textile design a worthy platform this year - and thanks to our partner country, we are receiving valuable impetus from the Swedish textile industry. Together we are getting in touch with the future."
Nina Katarina Karlsson, Counsellor for Culture at the Swedish Embassy in Berlin: "We are delighted to be the partner country of Textile Week this year. And we are looking forward to presenting the innovative opportunities that the Swedish textile industry has developed over the past few years. We have also taken important steps towards climate neutrality in this area. The resulting solutions will contribute to making Sweden climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. Our participation in Textile Week also strengthens the basis for an ongoing dialogue between Sweden and its most important trading partner, Germany. The exciting workshops, presentations and exhibitions are arousing interest, which means that we are moving in a very important and forward-looking direction with Textile Week."
In the exhibition, which is free of charge for visitors, Textile Week presents different types of textiles and production techniques as well as bio-based materials, new recycling processes and innovative application examples. The aim is to make textile design visible as an innovation-driving design discipline and to promote networking between textile designers and other industries. The supporting programme of lectures and workshops will provide insights into work processes and new ways of using and processing textiles, which can also open up new perspectives for other areas of design.

Fabric made from textile waste and renewable wood: Swedish companies Södra and Lindex rely on Oncemore, an innovative process for recycling mixed fabrics.
Secret Spaces explores the possible applications and potential of multi-layered textiles. Two-dimensional textiles can develop a fascinating three-dimensional form thanks to their technical properties.
