With the ‘Satellite’, we have transformed a construction site facility right in the heart of Hamburg city centre into a creative pop-up space – and tested a new model for temporary use.
The “Satellit” was a pop-up space and urban showcase for Hamburg’s creative industries – right in the heart of the city’s bustling centre, at the busy junction between the main railway station and Mönckebergstraße, and in the immediate vicinity of the former creative hub Jupiter.
What made the ‘Satellit’ special was that a construction site facility itself became a venue for creative temporary use. As part of the regeneration of the listed Klöpperhaus by the property company Tishman Speyer, the Hamburg Creative Economy Association ( Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft ) took over the ground floor of the containers erected for the building site and made it temporarily available for use by players in the creative industries.
In doing so, we tested a new model for the creative interim use of spaces: even temporary structures created as part of construction projects can provide space for the creative industries and culture for a limited period – in a central, visible and affordable location.
Whether a design shop, art gallery or a venue for civil society events: the ‘Satellit’ provided space for a variety of concepts and brought creative work to the fore right in the heart of Hamburg city centre. At the same time, the pilot project provided valuable insights into how construction site facilities could be temporarily opened up for creative uses in other locations in the future.

The rental period is a minimum of one to a maximum of eight weeks, with the rooms being rented on a weekly basis from Wednesday to Tuesday.
