Where radishes and turnips were once stored in freight halls and station buildings, a creative hotspot with a view of the harbour and the Elbe has been emerging since 2015. Numerous creative people work between warehouses and rail beds - and invite you to linger at the interface between Rothenburgsort, Veddel, the city centre and HafenCity. Together with HafenCity GmbH and the user representation 5+1, we are continuously developing Oberhafenquartier. However, the land will remain the property of the City of Hamburg, because this will ensure fair rents in Oberhafen in the long term.

The quarter is located in eastern HafenCity and is bordered by the railway embankment and the waterfront of Oberhafen with the wholesale market behind it. With the Oberhafenbrücke and Stockmeyerstrasse, it has a direct connection to the Deichtorhallen and the Kunstmeile, as well as to the central quarters of HafenCity. The only access at the moment is in the north of the area: coming from HafenCity or the city centre, you turn into the area under the bridge right next to the listed Oberhafen canteen. The Steinstraße underground station and the main railway station are only a few minutes' walk from here.
- Development
Together with HafenCity GmbH, we are shaping the gradual and dialogue-oriented transformation process as representatives of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Creative professionals and users in the Oberhafen are closely involved in the development and are actively shaping the neighbourhood with their experience and expertise - for example, in the conversion of vacant spaces or the design and use of outdoor spaces. With the user representation "5+1", which is funded by the public sector, the tenants have a strong and legitimate voice in shaping the future and character of the neighbourhood as well as the entire transformation process.
- Special construction features
Like HafenCity as a whole, the Oberhafen quarter lies in front of the dyke line. The difference is that it has not been raised to a flood-safe level of at least 7.5 m above sea level. During storm surges, the Oberhafen quarter is at risk of flooding from a water level of 5.2 m above sea level. This water level was last exceeded in 2013 and 1999. The risk of flooding, along with the noise pollution from rail traffic, is one reason why residential use is not permitted in this area.
