The Goethe-Institut is committed to cultural exchange, education and social discourse in an international context and supports the teaching and learning of the German language. It promotes art and culture in all disciplines through a wide range of sponsorship projects around the world and supports professionals, young talent and amateurs in realising residencies and projects at home and abroad.
Visual arts
Group and solo exhibitions, panel discussions, conferences, research trips, workshops - the Goethe-Institut facilitates encounters and discussions with art from Germany through a wide range of activities abroad. The focus is on contemporary art in all disciplines: painting, sculpture, graphic art, architecture, photography, media art, design and fashion.
Literature
The international literary dialogue is supported by translation grants, readings, workshops and residencies. With its global networking activities, the Goethe-Institut creates meeting places for cultural co-operation and mutual exchange and strengthens local literary scenes and book markets.
Music
The Goethe-Institut conveys an up-to-date picture of the diverse musical life in Germany and initiates an exchange between artists at home and abroad. Over 1,000 music projects from all genres take place every year, both in the professional, young and amateur sectors.
Film, television, radio
Every year, the Goethe-Institut organises several thousand film screenings as well as film festivals and workshops that offer German and international filmmakers a platform for joint projects. The institute also cooperates with public television and radio broadcasters and supports innovative radio drama and radio art.
Dance and theatre
The Goethe-Institut enables international and German theatre and dance professionals to exchange, meet and discuss in the field of performing arts. The focus is on contemporary drama and spoken theatre, contemporary dance, performance, theatre for children and young people, puppet and figure theatre and new drama.
Prizes and awards
With prizes and awards, the Goethe-Institut aims to honour outstanding cultural work and promote partnership and dialogue in international cultural exchange.
Education and knowledge
The Goethe-Institut also creates platforms for cultural professionals, academics and journalists to exchange views on social issues.
